The Power of the Mind
Once again we’ll refer to Daniel Webster to define the mind for us: the part of an individual that feels, perceives, thinks, wills and especially reasons.
Thoughts - The Battle Begins In Your Mind
Thoughts, the things you feel, perceive and reason with, can either be your own worst enemy and lead to your demise or they can be your strongest ally and take you down the road of life triumphantly. Your thoughts can free you or enslave you; your thoughts can give you victory or lead you down a spiral of agony and defeat. How you perceive your situation determines how you will respond to it.
Learning how to control your mind, your thoughts, and your actions are a key ingredient to the success of your fitness program.
A few years ago in one of my bible classes, our instructor told us two remarkable accounts of real people illustrating the power of the mind like nothing else.
Cancer Patient
In 1950, the drug Krebiozen, had received national publicity as a “cure” for cancer and was being tested by the American Medical Association. Dr. Bruno Klopfer was a researcher involved in the testing of Krebiozen. One of his patients had lymphosarcomea, a far-advanced malignancy involving the lymph nodes. The patient, Mr. Wright, had huge tumor masses throughout his body and was in such desperate physical condition that he had to take oxygen by mask, and fluid had to be removed from his chest every two days. When Mr. Wright discovered that Dr. Klopfer was involved in the research on Krebiozen, he begged to be given Krebiozen treatments and Dr. Klopfer did so. The results were phenomenal. Mr. Wright’s recovery was incredible; his tumors had shrunk dramatically and he was able to resume normal life.
A few months passed and The American Medical Association as well as the Federal Drug Administration published reports that the drug Krebiozen was worthless in fighting cancer. Surprisingly, when Mr. Wright heard the news his tumors re-appeared. Surmising that Mr. Wright’s belief in the drug had caused his recovery, and that his thinking that the circumstances justified unusual measures, Dr. Klopfer told Mr. Wright that he obtained a new, super-refined strength of Krebiozen that would produce better results. Actually the injections he was receiving were simply sterile water. Once again the tumors melted and Mr. Wright was symptom free for two months. One day the American Medical Association’s findings went nation wide and appeared in the press: “Nationwide tests show Krebiozen to be a worthless drug in the treatment of cancer.” Mr. Wright was dead within a few days.
